Fire in South Chilcotins - July 22, 2010

Postby Inacycle » July 23rd, 2010, 9:01 am

I know there are a few MBs with upcoming riding trips to the South Chilcotins (including myself). FYI - there is a fire in the Yalakom Valley and an evacuation alert was issued yesterday afternoon for that area. As far as I can glean from people who live/ride in that area, this affects only the Shulaps Range traverse at this time but all other trails are open for riding.

Thanks Ina!

From what we can tell, it's about 8km from Rd 40 / Carpenter Lake Rd - the road into Goldbridge from Lillooet. If anyone is heading in that way, it's worth checking frequently for road closures in case the fire grows. And the DriveBC website sucked last year for useful info.

I mention this because August long last year both Carpenter Lake Rd AND the Hurley FSR were closed for a while because of forest fires! Which meant no access in or out of Goldbridge / Bralorne. We got "stranded' in Bralorne for a night after our trip because all the roads were closed.

It's like deja vu all over again

FYI - Did some trail recon this past weekend and was happy to see that the Shulaps Traverse trail head/trail was not affected by the Jade Mine Road fire in the Yalakom Valley. However, we did get snowed on in the middle of the afternoon just below the sub-alpine :o . Winter's coming!
