Great Britain Set Second Set World Record in Women’s Pursuit – update

In a thrilling women’s team sprint final Great Britain came from behind to beat world champions Australia and set a new world record in the process, clocking a time of 32.754.

The Australian duo of Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch had set a new world record of 32.828 earlier in the day at the London Olympic velodrome and went into the final as favourites. They led the race throughout until Britain’s Victoria Pendleton stormed back with a final lap time of 13.962 to secure the gold medal.

Tuesday February 14th (aka Valentine’s Day) marked the end of the 4X series for this winter. Does that mean summer is on its way? I think we can all agree that we sure hope so.

The FVMBA appreciates everyone who came out to race or volunteer this year, especially those that decided to spend Valentines Day with their two wheeled sweetheart and join in for the finals. Check out the final point tally and some great photos by Collin Cameron and Kevin Feather to see how it all went down.

Kelly racing towards her 2nd overall finish!

The FVMBA would like to thank all sponsors who helped make the series a success. They had support from Race Face, Norco, Kona, Pinkbike, Kali, Chromag, Wentings Cycle, North Shore Bike Shop, Cranky’s Aldergrove, Obsession Bikes, Lifecycle and Maple Ridge Cycle.

One of the favorite stories from this year was being able to help out a group of students in need. Kids were hooked up with a Rampage frame and wheelset from Norco. The local community and sponsors then decided to give a little extra and set the bike up for the kids. These kids are set to rip it up next year!

The 2012 route offers the same smorgasbord of great venues as last year, but will see an all new Day 7 in Whistler and some additions and tweaks to the other six days. “We never rest on our laurels, having our course designers who are core mountain bikers and trail builders means new trails are added every year”, said president Dean Payne. In addition to Whistler, participants will experience amazing singletrack in the communities of Cumberland, Campbell River, Powell River, Sechelt, and Squamish.

Now with the addition of two timed sections for the first six days, BCBR boasts twelve Enduro-style sections. Last year, in a continual pursuit to evolve the event, BC Bike Race included two days with two separate timed sections per day. The “Race within the Race” was launched, tried and true to ensure that the expanded timed sections in 2012 would be a success.

Gravity legend Brian Lopes rode the BC Bike Race 2011 edition, won a couple of the Enduro timed sections and capped of his amazing week with an awesome athletic performance by hitting the podium on the final day in Whistler. Lopes shared his perspective post-race:

“BC bike race was one of the most fun events I have ever done. Every day we were treated to some of the best trails in the world, trails I would have never experienced if it weren’t for the BC Bike Race. The race was really one against myself most of the time, but with a few timed downhill sections thrown in I knew I had a chance of actually getting some results there. Like all top road stage races, there are categories for those with different skills and it was great to see the BC Bike race organizers throw in some contests for those with exceptional DH skills.”

BC Bike Race organizers’ goal is for everyone to have the best time possible shredding the amazing singletrack that is on offer. “People have different styles, so we want to ensure that everyone has a chance to showcase their unique skill sets” said course director Andreas Hestler. “Enduro racing essentially means that riders instead of pinning it all day will be able to ride around the body of the course and really focus in on a few very fast moments”.

The ‘Challenge’ course is also undergoing some changes, and with a growing number of participants the BCBR team is working hard to make all events as rider friendly as possible. Both courses will see adjustment to ensure less merging of the Challenge and Epic groups, keeping the rider’s experience in mind.

The event has only 20 spots remaining and will shortly be ‘Sold Out’. This year as last year BCBR will have only 500 coveted spots available, so plan for the vacation of a life, come join us for 2012.

Under sunny skies and unseasonably warm, 55 degree temperatures, after a long I-5 drive and handfuls of holiday cookies later, we eagerly grabbed our mountain bikes and headed for some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest single track trails in Olympia’s Capital Forest to go for a muddy holiday ride…

Armed with our new Santa-delivered, action cameras fresh out of the boxes, we clicked in and excitedly mounted up to see what kind of adventures we could film over 10.5 miles of ups, downs and rooty arounds…

*Includes fast & fun, expert rider Jim views, testing out his new Contour ROAM camera bombing down narrow sections at speeds near 20 mph! And Nadja with her new Nikon pocket waterproof camera! = + !!

Additional holiday gift appearances by a couple of our nation’s most well-known volcanoes surprised us and enhanced the clear cut views when majestic Mount Rainier and neighboring sleeping giant, Mount Saint Helens appeared on the eastern Cascade mountain horizon, with possibly a sleigh and reindeer overhead…
